White Bread was made for… Chocolate!

White Bread was made for… Chocolate!

Yes, that’s right. I just wrote white bread was made for chocolate. And for breakfast no least. It is. Really. I wouldn’t lie here. Especially about chocolate.

I was first introduced to chocolate on bread from my college roommate, Leive, from Belgium. I was repulsed at first; however, once you try it, you will be hooked.

While you could put your chocolate on wheat or brown bread, it doesn’t quite work in my opinion. It is something about white bread. It compliments the chocolate.

You can put on your bread Nutella (chocolate hazelnut) spread, “Vlokken” (flakes) or “Hagel”(sprinkles). Various options such as pure, milk, or white chocolate. I like them all.

So this morning I felt like white bread and “Vlokken.” And it was so very satisfying! Yum!

Crêpes in the US?

Crêpes in the US?

Real crêpes in the US? And outside of a large metro area such as New York City at that?

Normally I would say no way; however, today I can yes it is possible.

Crêpe World opened recently in Rocky Mount, NC. We went there today to see what it was all about. Vibe was cool and yet relaxed. They serve both sweet and savory crêpes at a reasonable price.

I went traditional with Nutella and banana.

Jeroen, my husband, went savory with the “Carolina” which was chicken, cheese, and salad.

Everything looked authentic to me in how they prepared the crêpes.

So a little bit of Europe has come to my neck of the woods. And I’m pretty happy with that.

Stocking Up on Spice Mixes

Stocking Up on Spice Mixes

The packing for my return to the States from The Netherlands has started. I’ve made my trips to local grocery stores, Deka Market, Albert Heijn, and Vomar, to stock up on spices and mixes to bring home.

I always run into this problem of wanting too much and not having enough space in the suitcase. In fact, I came with one suitcase and will leave with two. I even may have to mail a package home!

I wish in the US, we had such diverse, high-quality, reasonably priced spice mixes for meat, vegetables, and potatoes. They are so easy to flavor a meal.

Back to packing for me!

PS – those hoping for more nomnom photos of food, I’ve got a few posts on the stovetop simmering away! Stay tuned!

Say No to McDonalds. Eat Local When Traveling in Europe.

Say No to McDonalds. Eat Local When Traveling in Europe.

I travel on my stomach. I really do. I can recall meals I’ve had quickier than the sights I’ve seen. And I take lots of photos of my food (as you can see below.) My goal when I travel is to eat local as possible. No McDonalds or other American restaurants are allowed when traveling in Europe. I visit local restaurants and sample the fare. To be honest, many times I have no clue what I’ve picked until it arrives in front of me. And that’s OK. It is part of the adventure of travel or life for that matter.
Food can tell you a lot about the region or country you are in.  Not only will you get a great meal made with the freshest ingredients, but you can connect with locals learning new things to make your holiday more authentic and, maybe, making new friends along the way.
So when you travel, try to eat local.

Photos to make your mouth water… some of my favorite Dutch foods.
